Road to All Star Sponsorship Program

The purpose of this page is to encourage dancers to support the growth of West Coast Swing in our Emerald Coast and Alabama Coastal Regions by sponsoring 80/20 Dance founder and owner, Jeremy Ruben, in his pursuit to become the only West Coast Swing All Star level competitive dance instructor in the area. We hope you take the time to review this page to learn what your community stands to gain by helping Jeremy achieve this goal. After reviewing this page, please consider donating to this cause by sponsoring Jeremy for the competition events listed at the end of this page.

To sponsor Jeremy for his next event, you will find the option to donate with the list of upcoming events at the bottom of this page!

Above is Jeremy’s Sponsorship and Points status as of January 11, 2019. Check back after each event for status updates. Our goal is to raise $500/event. Even a small contribution will help ensure Jeremy is can continue to compete, and by doing so, he continues to gain knowledge and experience, all of which is brought back to Florida Panhandle and Alabama Coastal Regions through his WCSwing programs!

What is an All Star West Coast Swing competitor and how is this achievement obtained?

West Coast Swing (from here forward referred to as WCSwing) is a dance style that creates arguably the best social leaders and followers it the dance world. One reason for this is a competition format that emphasizes impromptu lead/follow dancing rather than traditional formats of competition that primarily focus on dancing well-rehearsed routines.

To sum up this exciting competition format called Jack & Jill, you need to know three unique attributes; (1) dance partners are randomly paired only minutes before they compete together, often resulting in partners who have never before danced together, (2) music we dance to is unknown until it is played, and (3) dancers compete for top placements to earn points that are accumulated until a minimum threshold of points is obtained for advancement to higher levels, or until the maximum threshold is achieved and dancers are forced into higher levels.

All dancers, regardless of skill or experience must start no higher than the Novice level. Dancers compete in preliminary rounds with hopes to be selected for the final round by judges tasked with determining who the top leaders and followers of each division are. If selected for the final round, leaders and followers will again be paired randomly and dance for top placements. The higher the placement, the more points a dancer is awarded. The size of the competition determines how many points are awarded… more competitors equals more points.

Below is a simple explanation of the points needed to advance per division:

Newcomer to Novice - No points needed to advance to Novice level

Novice to Intermediate - 16 points earned at the Novice level

Intermediate to Advanced - 30 point earned at the Intermediate level

Advanced to All Star - 45 points earned at the Advanced level within a 36 month time period

What does Jeremy achieving All Star status mean for your dance community?

A dance community can only be as strong as the instructors who lead it. We have learned that the overall health of a dance community is contingent upon whether or not dancers of that community continue to progress in their level of skill and sense of fulfillment. When progress plateaus, attrition takes hold, and dance communities start to wane. So, the question is, how do communities continue to progress in skill, motivation, and fulfillment?

An investment in the development of your local instructors is the very best way to support the growth of your dance community! As the top dancers in your community, your instructors must travel far and wide to get the training THEY need to continue to be inspired to be the best instructors they can be. While instructors who live in big cites can easily gain access to top level coaching, instructors who serve smaller communities like Pace, Milton, Pensacola, etc., must incur the high cost of traveling to and staying in larger cities to gain access to top-level professional development. Competition events have virtually EVERYTHING your instructors need to become the best dancers/instructors they can be, but the high cost of traveling to these events can prohibit your instructors from getting the development they need.

If the entire dance community were to support their instructors through sponsorship for competition events, accesses to professional development becomes a reality, and the entire dance community benefits from instructors who are inspired, motivated, highly skilled, and current on the ever-changing trends of WCSwing.

Why Jeremy should be your choice for sponsorship

No professional in the region has shown more commitment and dedication to teaching WCSwing and the development of our Emerald Coast dance community than Jeremy. Since moving to the area in October of 2013, he co-founded, developed, and managed the top studio in Pensacola. After nearly 5 years of continued training, education, and success on the competition circuit, Jeremy left his Pensacola studio in capable hands to create a studio concept that better embodied his ever-evolving methods of teaching. In September of 2018, he opened an entirely new studio concept called 80/20 Dance in the Pace/Milton, FL area.

While dance instructors come and go, often teaching at local community centers or nightclubs, Jeremy has never hesitated to make substantial personal investments in developing studio environments where the quality of instruction and service can be best managed. Rather than being a part-time instructor who teaches on the side, Jeremy has dedicated his career with a full-time commitment to developing the most effective and popular dance programs in the region.

Jeremy is vested in this region! You can count on his commitment and consistency, teaching day in and day out. His investments in his personal WCSwing development are unparalleled in the region, spending his personal resources on working with the top WCSwing professionals in the world to develop what he feels are the most comprehensive and complete programs around… and the development continues!

Jeremy’s greatest passion revolves around his never-ending pursuit to learn and develop methods of teaching, resulting in the creation of skilled dancers faster than any other programs around. His study of many different pedagogies of dance instruction has shaped his approach to teaching this highly versatile style of dance.

Jeremy believes teaching dance should involve a constant pursuit of knowledge of this ever-evolving style of dance. The only place for him to gain access to this knowledge is by attending competition events where he can dance with, compete among, associate with, learn from, and network with the top dancers in the world. This knowledge comes back to his students through the enthusiasm and passion he gains from competition events.

Lastly, Jeremy thus far has never sought out sponsorship from his community. Despite being able to attend relatively few events each year, Jeremy has managed to become the most successful competitive WCSwing dancer in the region, achieving Advanced competitive status with consistent top 5 placements over the past five years, something no other local professional has done. However, to break through to the ranks of All Star, Jeremy must gain access to more training and attend more competitions. The key to his advancement awaits at dozens of events held across the Nation.

Please consider investing in the future of your dance community by making a modest donation to his sponsorship program. If all his students contributed $10 to each event, he will undoubtedly reach the goal of All Star, unlocking development opportunities only reserved for All Star dancers.

Competition Wish List
